Sweet-Style Spaghetti

I know it’s unusual for a pasta dish to be sweet, so don’t freak out! Sweet-style is very traditional for a Filipino version of [spaghetti] bolognese. Every Filipino household will have different recipes, but all have one thing in common…the sweetness factor.

Sweet-Style Spaghetti
Yield: 4-6 servings
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 30 minutes

1 pound dried spaghetti pasta
2 teaspoons olive oil
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 medium onion, diced
1/2 pound ground beef
1/2 cup condensed milk
12 ounces marinara sauce
1/2 cup black olives, chopped
4 ounces Velveeta, cubed
salt & pepper, to taste
grated parmesan cheese, for serving

1. In a large pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add the onions and cook until translucent. Add the ground beef, season with salt and pepper. Cook until crumbled and no longer pink.
2. Stir in the condensed milk and simmer for 3 minutes. Add the marinara sauce. Let boil then reduce heat to low. Simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
3. Cook spaghetti according to package directions.
4. Stir in the cheese cubes on to the sauce. Simmer additional 5 minutes, or until the cheese has completely melted.
5. Once the noodles are al dente, drain, then toss with the sauce.
6. Serve with garlic toast.
